Brisbane Opal Museum is a world class cultural institution situated in the heart of Windsor (just 10 minute drive north of the Brisbane CBD and 15 minute drive south of the airport). Come discover this incredible gemstone through one of our many tour options. Once you visit you will know why opal is Australia’s National Gemstone.

Tour Options

Discover the rich history of opal mining, the geology behind opal formation, opal mining techniques, and of course marvel at the many hundreds of incredible opal specimens from all over Australia and the world.

Guided Tour

Have one of our knowledgeable tour guides take you around the museum and share with you the history and collection of this wonderful gemstone.

Tour times are at 10.30am, 12.00pm and 1.30pm

The tour takes 30 - 45 minutes

  • $20 per person.

  • Under 15 is $10,

  • Under five years of age is FREE.

Please arrive 10 - 15min before the tour starts.

Self Guided Tour

Walk around the museum at your own leisure - $10 pp

Optional extra: Get your own virtual tour guide with our 10'“ tablet which has over 30 videos explaining the displays and specimens throughout our museum. The average tour time is 30 minutes (up to 1hour+). Tablet is only $5 each.

  • Entry is $10 per person (Under 5 Free)

  • The Tablet is $5 each.

  • 11am - 11.45am

  • 12.30pm - 1.15pm

  • 2pm - 2.45pm

  • 3.30 - 4.00pm (last tour is at 4pm - allowing 30min)

The tablet comes with headphones (if you have young children this may not be suitable and therefore we recommend the guided tour).

Walk-in’s welcome! - Booking is not required.

Please note: On Saturday the last tour is at 3pm. On Sunday the last tour is at 2pm.

Large group tours

If you have more than 10 people in your group please make a booking. These tours operate on weekdays at 3 p.m. Some exceptions are possible.

Opal Cutting Experience

Take your opal museum experience to the next level by choosing an opal and watching it get shaped and polished. You get to keep this opal. Prices range from $50 -$300 and take 10-20min (depending on the specimen chosen).

No need to book (however there may be a waiting period up to 30min). Available weekdays between 11:00 am-2.30pm.

In Australia, there are 17 opal fields covering 3 states. The reason why Australia has opal is due to a series of unique congruent geological events, including the fact that over 100 million years ago most of central Australia was covered by a vast shallow inland sea….

When to visit the Museum and Jewellery shop

The museum and jewellery shop is in the same building, however, the museum does close earlier than the shop
